Apportioned Tags
The plate that lets you run in several states, paying in proportion to the miles you drive in each.
What it is
Apportioned Tags are the plates issued under the International Registration Plan. Instead of registering your truck in every state you pass through, you register once in your base state and the fee is split by the miles you report in each jurisdiction.
The plate reads "Apportioned" and comes with a cab card listing the states you are authorized to run in. That cab card has to stay in the cab: it is what the inspector asks for.
You need it if
- You run in two or more states
- Your vehicle is over 26,000 lbs or has three axles
- You are adding states to an existing registration
- You need to renew this year’s IRP registration
What documents you need
- Vehicle title
- DOT number and company information
- Stamped Schedule 1 from form 2290
- Estimated mileage by state

What is my base state?
Where you have a physical location, keep the vehicles and maintain records. For most of our clients that is Florida.
Can I add states later?
Yes, it is an amendment to the registration and a new cab card is issued with the updated states.
What if I enter a state not on my cab card?
You need a temporary trip permit for that state. Getting stopped without one means a fine.
How is the fee calculated?
By vehicle weight and the percentage of miles you report in each state. The first year uses an estimated table.
