IFTA Decals

One license to report fuel tax for every state you run through, instead of a separate permit for each.

What it is

IFTA, the International Fuel Tax Agreement, is the agreement among U.S. states and Canadian provinces that unifies fuel tax reporting. Instead of settling with each jurisdiction separately, you file one quarterly return in your base state and it distributes what is owed.

You get a license and a pair of decals per vehicle, mounted on both sides of the cab. They renew yearly, and you must keep mileage and gallon records by state, because that is what backs your return under audit.

You need it if

  • You run a vehicle over 26,000 lbs
  • Your vehicle has three or more axles, regardless of weight
  • You cross state lines or run into Canada
  • You are Florida-based and travel out of state

What documents you need

  • DOT number and company information
  • Vehicle list with VINs
  • Mileage records by state
  • Fuel purchase receipts

How long it takes

Quick filing. Decals arrive by mail from the state.

Common questions

When are returns due?

Every quarter, with a hard deadline. Filing late brings penalties and interest even if the return comes out in your favor.

What if I do not keep mileage records?

In an audit, with no records the state estimates high and you pay the difference. Records are your defense.

Are decals good all year?

They run by calendar year. There is a grace period early in the year to run last year’s decals while the new ones arrive.

What if I did not run at all one quarter?

You still file a zero return. Filing nothing is what triggers the penalty.
