Florida registration for vehicles that stay in state. Simpler than IRP, and cheaper.

What it is

If your commercial vehicle never leaves Florida, you do not need IRP registration: the state local tag is enough, and it is a simpler, cheaper filing.

It fits delivery trucks, dump trucks, tow trucks and fleets working inside the metro area. We check first whether your operation fits here or whether apportioned registration serves you better.

You need it if

  • Your vehicle operates only inside Florida
  • You run delivery or local service trucks
  • You are renewing annual vehicle registration
  • You are not sure whether you need local or apportioned plates

What documents you need

  • Vehicle title
  • Company documents
  • Proof of current insurance
  • Schedule 1 from the 2290 if the vehicle is 55,000 lbs or more

How long it takes

Filed directly with the state.

Common questions

What if I leave Florida with a local tag?

You would need a temporary trip permit. If you do it often, switching to apportioned works out better.

Can I switch from local to apportioned?

Yes, we file IRP registration and swap the plate. We tell you at what point the change pays off.

Do you register trailers too?

Yes, trailer and semi-trailer registration is separate from the power unit.

Do I need the 2290 for a local tag?

Only if the vehicle is 55,000 lbs or more. Below that it is not required.
