MC Authority

The permit that lets you haul other people’s freight across state lines. Without it, crossing with cargo is illegal.

What it is

MC Authority, or Motor Carrier Authority, is the permit FMCSA grants to haul third-party freight across state lines. It is what makes you a for-hire carrier in the federal government’s eyes.

Applying is not enough: you must designate a process agent in every state you operate in and show proof of liability insurance. FMCSA will not activate the authority until both are in place.

You need it if

You haul freight that is not yours, for pay
You cross state lines with cargo
You want to work directly with brokers and shippers
You plan to run under your own name instead of someone else’s authority

How long it takes

FMCSA publishes the application and opens a protest period before activation. The agency sets the timing.

Common questions

Can I work while approval is pending?

Not with interstate third-party freight. Until the authority is active, running that way risks fines and having your load held.

What is the BOC-3?

It designates an agent who can receive legal documents on your behalf in each state. It is mandatory and we file it alongside the authority.

How much insurance is required?

It depends on what you haul. General freight is usually $750,000 in liability coverage, and it goes up for hazardous materials.

Can a revoked authority be reinstated?

Sometimes, depending on why it was revoked and how long it has been inactive. We check before telling you whether to reinstate or start fresh.
