MOTUS

FMCSA’s new registration system. It replaces the old portal and changes how filings work.

What it is

MOTUS is the registration system FMCSA launched to replace the Unified Registration System and the portal the industry had used for years. It brings registration, compliance and safety filings onto one platform.

It adds identity and business verification, real-time data validation and automated notices about your registration status. For carriers that means fewer errors, but also a new process to learn from scratch.

It is federal, not state-level: it applies to any FMCSA-regulated company, wherever you operate.

You need it if

  • You are registering a new company with FMCSA
  • You need to update an existing registration
  • Your filing was left halfway in the old portal
  • You have to complete identity and business verification

What documents you need

  • Owner photo ID for verification
  • Company formation documents
  • EIN and physical business address
  • DOT number, if you already have one

How long it takes

Depends on FMCSA’s rollout schedule and identity verification.

Common questions

Do I need to do anything if I am already registered?

Yes. Existing companies must create an account and complete identity and business verification in the new system. It does not migrate on its own.

Does MOTUS replace my DOT number?

No. Your DOT number stays the same. MOTUS is the platform where the related filings now happen.

Is this a Florida state system?

No, it is federal. FMCSA runs it and it applies to every company they regulate, anywhere.

Why should you handle it?

Because it is new and the guidance keeps changing. We file in it daily and know what the system asks for at each step.
