Road Taxes

The federal heavy vehicle use tax, form 2290. It is the paper they ask for to renew your plates.

What it is

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, filed on form 2290 with the IRS, is the federal tax vehicles of 55,000 lbs or more pay for using public highways.

The receipt you get, the stamped Schedule 1, is what the DMV asks for to renew plates. No Schedule 1, no renewal, so in practice the 2290 is the gateway to the rest of the year’s filings.

You need it if

  • Your vehicle weighs 55,000 lbs or more
  • You are renewing truck plates
  • You bought a heavy vehicle during the tax period
  • You need a stamped Schedule 1 for another filing

What documents you need

  • Company EIN, not a Social Security number
  • VIN for each vehicle
  • Taxable gross weight
  • Month of first use on public highways

How long it takes

Stamped Schedule 1 arrives once the IRS accepts the return.

Common questions

What is the tax period?

July through June. The main filing happens at the start of the period, and vehicles bought later are filed by their month of first use.

Can I use my Social Security number?

No. The IRS requires an EIN for the 2290. If you do not have one, we get it first.

What if I drive under 5,000 miles a year?

It can be claimed as a low-mileage vehicle and be exempt from payment, but you still have to file the form.

What if I typed a VIN wrong?

It is fixed with a VIN correction filing. Quick to do, but better caught before you go to the DMV.
