The number that identifies your company to the Department of Transportation. You cannot operate legally without it.

What it is

The DOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to every company operating commercial vehicles. It works like your company license plate: it goes on the truck door and it is what a roadside inspector looks up.

It is issued by FMCSA and tied to your safety record, inspections and audits. So it is not just a startup formality: it has to stay current every time your data, fleet or operation changes.

You need it if

You operate a vehicle over 10,001 lbs gross weight
You haul freight across state lines
You carry hazardous materials in placardable quantities
You transport more than 8 passengers for compensation

Company formation documents (LLC, Corp or DBA)
EIN issued by the IRS
Physical business address, not a PO box
Owner and vehicle information

Common questions

Does the DOT number expire?

It does not expire, but it must be updated every two years with form MCS-150, and whenever company data changes. Skip the update and the number is deactivated.

Is a DOT number the same as MC authority?

No. DOT identifies you; MC authority lets you haul other people’s freight across state lines. Many carriers need both.

Do I need a DOT number if I only run inside Florida?

Florida requires a DOT number for commercial vehicles above a certain weight even without crossing state lines. We check it against your equipment.

Can I file it myself?

You can. Most people call us because one wrong field blocks activation, and fixing it later takes longer than filing it right the first time.
